DIY Tips To Disinfect Your Water Tank And Drink Healthy Water

Since you use the water tank to consume water for not only washing clothes or cleaning the dishes and plates but also as drinking water, so it is important to clean it or we can say to disinfect it. You should disinfect the  tank after every 6 months which means twice a year.

But, if you can’t disinfect the tank twice a year, then try to disinfect it for at least one a year at every cost. Whether you need to hire an expert for this purpose or you need to do it yourself, it is the most important task keeping in mind your health and the health of your family.

Disinfection is crucial for the maintenance of water tanks as well.

How to Disinfect Water Tank?

Here are some DIY tips on how to disinfect your water tank easily:

  • At first step, you need to turn off the water pump at home. If you have a spate refilling pump, turn that off too.
  • Turn off the valves as well that allows the water to enter into the water tank.
  • Empty the water tank. To do so, turn on the valves that allow the water to exit from the water tank. Also open up the water supply taps in your home that includes the taps in the kitchen, washroom, toilet, laundry and in the backyard as well.
  • To clean the water tank, fill the buckets with the water when you are emptying the water tank. It is good to fill the buckets from the taps that are on the floor so that you don’t need to carry the buckets full of water from ground floor to the top floor.
  • Use a ladder to enter into the tank from the opening and fill the small buckets with the water that is still left in the water tank and throw the water out of the tank.
  • Use clean clothes or mops to dry the surfaces of the water tank to remove the moisture.
  • You will see the mud and dirt setting up at the bottom of the water tank. Use some tool to scratch that mud and collect it in a pot and throw it out of the tank.
  • Make sure that no trash, mud, dirt or other particles remains in the water tank. Add some more water to remove the dust and mud as well. Throw that water away from the tank and dry the bottom surface again.
  • After cleaning the bottom, it is time to clean the walls of the tank. You can clean the wall prior to the bottom as well to save time. Because, if you clean the walls at second stage; you will need to clean the bottom for one more time.
  • After cleaning the walls, clean the door or the lid of the tanks as well.
  • When you are sure that tanks if clean; use the water once more to clean any remaining particles of mud or dirt.
  • Pass out the buckets and all the cleaning tools and get out of the tank as well.
  • Now fill the water tank with the fresh water by first turning off the taps and then turning on the water pump and the valve that allows the water to enter into the tank.
  • Add disinfectant into the water as well. The disinfectant might be Potassium Permanganate solutions and Gandak which is considered a good and safe water disinfectant.

It’s all done now. Just make sure that during the yearly buildings inspection, check your water tank as well and clean it. Also look for any damages or water tank leaks during the annual inspection.
