Joining a gym is good for your health, but it might not be good for your wallet. Pricey monthly memberships can be a drain on your finances if you don’t visit the gym regularly. Worse, they can be a pain to cancel once you do decide to quit.
Before you sign up for a gym membership, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. Here’s everything you need to know about how much it costs to join LA Fitness, plus how to cancel if you decide it’s not right for you.
How much an LA Fitness membership costs
LA Fitness is the No. 1 health club in the U.S., according to industry publication Club Industry. The chain, headquartered in Irvine, California, has more than 700 locations nationwide and brought in an estimated $2 billion in revenue in 2017. That revenue comes from the many people who’ve signed up for the club’s memberships.
LA Fitness has two types of memberships:
- For $29.99 per month (plus a $99 initiation fee and a $39 annual fee) you get access to multiple clubs in a single state.
- For $26.99 per month (plus a $99 initiation fee and a $39 annual fee) you get access to a single club.
So, if you choose the multiple club access option, you’d pay $398.88 for a year of membership — $359.88 in monthly fees plus a $39 annual fee – as well as the one-time $99 initiation fee, for a grand total of $497.88. If you opt for single-club access, you’d pay a total of $461.88.
The fine print
Not surprisingly, LA Fitness memberships come with some fine print. For one, if you live in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Delaware, different pricing might apply. Prices are also different at Signature Clubs and locations in Canada.
For example, a Signature club in Beverly Hills costs $41.99 per month, though that price includes amenities like towels and the squash courts. At a Premier Plus clubs, like the one in Levittown, New York, memberships range from $31.99 to $36.99 per month. Clubs in Tennessee have no initiation fee, but higher monthly membership costs. You can find the pricing for the club you want to join on the LA Fitness website.
At some locations, single-club membership isn’t an option. You might also have to pay an extra fee to access some amenities, like the Kids Club, personal training, or racquetball, at certain locations. Access to the racquetball courts, for example, might cost an additional $7 per month.
You have to sign up for at least two months of membership. Your first and last month of membership are due when you sign up. The annual fee is typically billed during the third month of membership. You can add more people to your membership for an additional fee.
How to cancel your LA Fitness membership
If you’ve signed up for an LA Fitness membership, but you decide it’s not the right fit for you, you can cancel your membership. To cancel, you must:
- Go online, log in to your account, and print a cancellation form.
- Mail the cancellation notice to the address listed on the form. (The company recommends sending the form via certified mail and keeping a copy for your records.) Or, you can mail a written cancellation notice to PO Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619-4170.
- To avoid being charged, the cancellation form should be postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date.
- Alternatively, you can drop off the cancellation form with the operations manager at an LA Fitness location between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. (Contact your local club for more information about in-person cancellations.)
Once you’ve cancelled, you can still use the club for one more month, since you already paid the last month’s dues when you enrolled. If you pre-paid, you won’t get your money refunded, but you’ll still be able to use the gym for whatever length of time you’ve already paid for.
If you won’t be able to use your gym membership for a while but don’t want to cancel entirely, you can also suspend your membership. Monthly members pay $10 a month while their membership is in suspension, but won’t have to pay another initiation fee when you reactivate. If you paid in advance, you can freeze your membership for up to six months for $35. You can suspend or freeze your membership by logging in to your account online.
Should you join LA Fitness?
Is LA Fitness the right gym for you? That depends on your budget and what you most want from a fitness centre. Compared to budget-priced options like Planet Fitness, LA Fitness is considerably more expensive. But it has more amenities like group classes, swimming pools, and childcare. It’s also more affordable than joining a luxury gym like Equinox, which can cost hundreds of dollars a month, plus a hefty initiation fee.
The best way to tell if LA Fitness is a good fit is to try it out for yourself before you sign on the dotted line. You can schedule a tour or request a five-day guest pass so you can try out the gym and see if the monthly costs and various fees are worth it to you.
