How to Update WhatsApp Without Losing Your Chats If you’ve been having issues updating your WhatsApp app recently, you’re not alone. There have been reports of this on various message boards and social media sites, with a lot of people searching for solutions on how to update WhatsApp without losing chats, photos and videos. Rest assured that we have the solutions you need here.
Back up your chats
Since you’ll need a backup of your chats, the first step is going to be backing them up. To do this, open WhatsApp on your phone and tap Menu in the lower left-hand corner. Go to Settings, then scroll down and tap Chat Settings. Here you can choose between backing up all chat media or just voice calls and video messages.
Make sure that both of these boxes are checked before tapping the back arrow button in the upper left-right corner. After doing so, it will prompt you for the place where you want to save it. If you have an iCloud account, one of the locations listed will be iCloud Drive so select that option and proceed with tapping Save at the bottom of your screen. Alternatively, if you have Google Photos installed on your device (it’s available from Play Store), select Google Photos from this list and follow the prompts for saving it there. If not then just select whichever location seems most convenient for you and go ahead with saving it there.
Uninstall WhatsApp
1. Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for WhatsApp in the search bar.
2. Click Get and then click Install.
3. Once it’s installed, open the app and sign into your account or create a new one by tapping on Create Account.
Then enter a phone number and verify it by entering the code from WhatsApp that you’ll receive on that number. Next go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage and press Uninstall next to WhatsApp. After this, you will have lost all of your chat history but you can simply download the latest version of Whatsapp if you need it back (don’t worry, they keep chats stored).
reinstall WhatsApp
To get your chats back, you’ll need to reinstall WhatsApp.
*Go to the Google Play Store on your phone and search for WhatsApp Messenger* *Tap Install* *Tap Accept* *Tap Accept again on the permissions screen that pops up* *Wait for the installation to finish and then open the app.* *You will be prompted to sign in or create a new account. Choose Sign in.* *Once you log into your account, all of your messages will automatically be restored!
Restore your chats
Open your chat window, then tap on the three-dot menu icon in the upper right-hand corner. Tap on Settings. Scroll down and tap Back Up Chats. Now open the app store, search for WhatsApp and install it. It will take a few minutes to download and update, but once it’s done you’ll have all of your chats restored! If you have backup data saved elsewhere on your phone, go ahead and delete those messages so they don’t get mixed up with this new backup.
The steps to restore WhatsApp are relatively simple: make sure that your contacts are backed up; back up your chats; delete the existing version of WhatsApp from your phone; re-install WhatsApp from Google Play or Apple App Store; wait while it updates, which may take several minutes depending on how large the file is and how fast your internet connection is.
