Coffee At Home

You mean you love having a good cup of coffee at your favorite coffee shop, but now you want the same quality from home-made coffee? I bring you some good news: we know that making espresso drinks at home requires a lot of investment, but manual preparation is much more affordable.

So let’s explore how to set up your own coffee extraction bar. From the coffee filter to immersion, this article will cover everything you need to get started. In addition, I will share with you some tips for getting great filtered coffee at home. Because let’s face it, the first coffee of the day is the most important, isn’t it?

COFFEE BEANS

First of all, of course, you need coffee beans! I recommend coffee beans instead of ground coffee (see why below). The rest, however, is up to your personal preferences.

Perhaps you like floral and fruity coffee. Or maybe you prefer something with notes of nuts and chocolate? No problem: just ask the barista at your coffee shop for a recommendation. They probably also sell the beans you’ve been drinking there!

However, if you want to be more careful when buying your beans, consider the origin of your favorite coffees and the level of roasting. This will put you on the right track in the future.

Remember, however, that the profile of your drink is not only dictated by coffee beans. It will affect the method of preparation, the water temperature, the size of the grind, among others.

Main tips for storing coffee:

  1. The roasting date is important! Coffee is a natural product and therefore has a shelf life. Except for variations, a rule of thumb is: just buy the coffee you will drink during the week. For more details on roasting dates and old coffee, see this guide.
  2. Store your coffee in an airtight container, at room temperature, and away from light. It will absorb the odors of all the food there.

PREPARATION & FILTRATION EQUIPMENT

There is a wide variety of preparation equipment that you can choose from.

Among the filtrate equipment, the most famous are Chemex, Hario V60, and Kalita Wave. A filtrate tends to have a cleaner profile than an immersion method.

Meanwhile, the main immersion preparation equipment is AeroPress, the French Press, and Clever. These are associated with a larger body.

However, there are many other types of preparation devices! You’ll find innovative refinements in traditional filtrate methods, coffee makers specially designed for portable use, large-scale coffee shops ( batch brew ), and more. Believe me, you will understand why when you see them!

Top tips for equipment:

  1. Keep your equipment clean. Make sure you remove all oils from the coffee after extraction, or else you will feel them in the next cup of coffee.
  2. Water the paper filters before use. Use hot water to remove the paper taste, so you have a cleaner cup of coffee.
  3. If the hot water comes in contact with cold preparation equipment, it will cool down immediately. So, as the device heats up slowly and you keep adding hot water, that new water will have a different temperature.

GRINDER

The rule is simple: the fresher the grind, the fresher the flavor! That is why it is recommended to buy coffee beans and grind them yourself.

There are two types of grinders: disc and blade. Disc grinders are considered superior to blade grinders. This is because the coffee at home will be ground more evenly, which leads to a better consistency. (When you make good coffee, you want to be able to make it again, don’t you?) However, blade grinders are usually much cheaper. Home coffee makers, who are beginners, may wish to start with a portable disc grinder, meaning that they can provide good quality at a reasonable price.

The next point to consider is the size of the grind. This will be dictated by the brewing equipment you choose, the coffee beans themselves, and your personal tastes.

Some general rules are: the finer the grind size, the greater the extraction due to a larger contact area. (And, in the filtrate, the longer the filtering time should be.) The thicker the grind, the shorter the extraction time. Under-extraction leads to sour flavors, while over-extraction creates a more bitter taste profile. On the other hand, if it is more bitter, you need to grind it thicker.

Of course, the size of the grind is not the only factor that affects the extraction – preparing a coffee is a delicate recipe in which you have to balance different attributes. The preparation time and the water temperature will also affect the extraction (more on these topics in a moment!) In this way, you will realize that it will be better to change other variables than the size of the grind.

Main grinding tips:

  1. Grind just the amount you need for your coffee. Ground coffee begins to lose flavor after approximately 15 minutes.
  2. As with your brewing equipment, be sure to clean your grinder after use. You don’t want to leave any old, expired beans to pollute the next cups of coffee.
